Preparing Your Child for Ig Therapy: Tips for Parents

Kids are remarkably adaptable, and with the right preparation, immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy can become a familiar, manageable part of your child’s routine. The techniques that make the biggest difference aren’t complicated; they’re small, intentional choices that help your child feel safe and comfortable throughout their Ig infusion. Whether your child is just starting Ig therapy or you’re looking for ways to make ongoing immunoglobulin treatments easier, these tips can make a real difference for families navigating treatment.

Using Play Therapy to Prepare Children for Ig Therapy

Children handle unfamiliar situations better when they know what to expect, and infusion therapy is no different. Play therapy is one of the most effective ways to explain the process before treatment day arrives. Using a stuffed animal or doll with a toy doctor kit, you can walk your child through what their nurse will do. Therapeutic play in pediatric health care helps normalize the treatment experience before it happens rather than explaining it in the moment.

Ways to Create a Smoother Ig Therapy Experience for Children

When so much of your child’s treatment is outside their control, creating a plan can go a long way towards a smooth visit.

  • Schedule wisely. Choose a treatment time when your child is well-rested and has eaten recently to avoid added stress. A hungry, tired kid will have a much harder time sitting through treatment than one who is calm and comfortable.
  • Give them a sense of control. Let your child pick the design of their band-aid or what they watch during their Ig therapy treatment. Feeling like an active participant in their own care can make a meaningful difference.
  • Create a treatment day tradition. Pick a special toy or activity that only comes out on infusion days, something your child can look forward to after the treatment.

Tips for Preparing Your Child for Ig Therapy

Hydration plays an important role in how smoothly the infusion treatment goes, and for children, it’s worth starting the process a couple of days before treatment rather than the morning of the infusion. Kids who are well-hydrated tend to have more accessible veins, experience fewer side effects, and recover more comfortably. If plain water is a battle in your household, fruit, yogurt, popsicles, and flavored water are all effective in making sure your child is hydrated.

Kids can also be more sensitive to the prick of the needle. Numbing creams or sprays can significantly reduce the discomfort of needle insertion for children who are particularly anxious about the process. Talk with your care team about what is appropriate for your child’s age and treatment type.

Keeping Kids Engaged During Pediatric Infusion Therapy

Distraction is an important tool, and during Ig infusions, it’s one of the most effective strategies available to parents. Having your child’s favorite movie or game gives them something to focus on that isn’t the infusion itself. For younger children, having an activity that they enjoy can keep them mentally present and calm their nervous system at the same time.

Using Positive Reinforcement to Build an Ig Therapy Routine

Positive reinforcement shapes how the child feels about Ig therapy over the long term, not just on a single treatment day. A sticker chart, a small treasure chest of prizes, or a planned activity after each Ig infusion gives your child something to look forward to and builds a positive association with treatment that grows over time. This isn’t to bribe them through every appointment, it’s to help them internalize that Ig therapy days are manageable, and that something good is always waiting on the other side.
