Pemphigus and pemphigoid are among a rare group of blistering autoimmune diseases that affect the skin and mucous membranes. Pemphigus affects the outer layer of the skin and causes lesions and blisters that are easily ruptured. When these lesions rupture, they are easily infected. Pemphigoid affects deeper layers of the skin, creating tense blisters that do not break easily.
