As the healthcare landscape continues to shift towards more personalized, accessible care, home infusion therapy has emerged as a powerful alternative to traditional infusion settings. For patients receiving intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) or subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) therapy, the option to receive treatment in the comfort of their own home offers more than just convenience—it offers freedom, improved quality of life, and a safer, more cost-effective care experience.

What Is Home Infusion Therapy?

Home infusion therapy involves the administration of medications—such as IVIg—through a needle or catheter in a patient’s home by a trained infusion nurse. Treatments like IVIg and SCIg are essential for managing chronic and rare immune conditions, including primary immune deficiency diseases (PI), chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), myasthenia gravis (MG), myositis, and more.

When these treatments are delivered at home, they eliminate the need for repeated hospital or clinic visits, reduce time away from work and family, minimize exposure to healthcare-associated infections, and improve overall patient comfort and convenience.

Home Infusion Therapy: Real Patient Insights

To better understand the impact of home infusion, the CSI clinical research team conducted a study titled Social Determinants of Health Impact on Participant Perception with Home Infusion of Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy, which was awarded the 2025 Outstanding Abstract Award by the National Home Infusion Foundation (NHIF). The study used a 30-question survey, guided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Social Determinants of Health framework.

It explored how home infusion affects patients’ lives beyond the clinical outcomes, including areas such as:

  • Access to Care
  • Financial Responsibility
  • Site of Care Safety
  • Cultural Awareness
  • General Mood
  • Overall Impression

The study found that patients from a wide variety of backgrounds—including different medical conditions, education levels, and geographic areas—expressed strong positive perceptions of home infusion therapy. Notably, patients receiving home IVIg therapy reported significant benefits in the following areas:

  • Safety and Comfort: Patients felt safer receiving infusions at home, with fewer concerns about exposure to infections or the stress of clinical environments.
  • Cost Savings: Many participants highlighted the reduction in travel costs, time off work, and other out-of-pocket expenses, making home infusion a cost-effective alternative to facility-based care.
  • Work-Life Balance: The ability to schedule Ig infusions around work, school, and family responsibilities was a major advantage. Home infusions allow patients to maintain greater independence and normalcy in daily life.
  • Mental Health and Mood: Patients consistently noted that receiving treatment in a familiar, private setting helped reduce anxiety and promote a more positive outlook during therapy.
  • Overall Satisfaction: Participants overwhelmingly preferred home infusion over clinic or hospital-based care, citing better quality of life and care experience.

Why Home Infusion Matters

Home infusion of IVIg and SCIg continues to gain support, not just for its convenience, but for its clear benefits to patients’ quality of life overall. By supporting better outcomes, promoting patient autonomy, and reducing costs, home infusion therapy represents the future of patient-centered care for individuals with rare and chronic diseases.
